Nordic skiers and snowmobilers using the state’s Sno-Park system can no longer loan those passes — whether for non-motorized groomed trails or for motorized Sno-Parks — between one another or trade them between two vehicles as they did before.

“We’re getting a lot of push-back from some people. Maybe they shared a permit with a friend, or you had a family with more than one vehicle they take out when they go skiing,” said spokesman Wayne McLaughlin of Washington State Parks, which oversees the state’s winter recreation program.

“But we also thought there was a lot of sharing going on beyond that, people passing out their permits to friends.”

The decision to allow one vehicle permit was a monetary one for Washington State Parks, McLaughlin said, noting that the state’s winter recreation “is a self-supporting program and it’s been having trouble getting by.

McLaughlin admitted that some non-motorized trail users were feeling “a lot of sticker shock” since the Sno-Parks permits had been raised from $30 to $40 two winters ago, and now the permit can only be associated with only one vehicle, not two.
